The idea behind the Beacon lamp came from the realization that lamps are typically placed near a wall, which presents a great opportunity for light diffusion. By constructing a lamp that has no light diffuser, the design is reduced to its essentials. The inspiration for this project came from antennae found in the science fiction universe, such as those on space crafts, ground facilities, or space stations. These antennae are elongated, straight, and sometimes feature a light beacon near the top.
What sets the Beacon lamp apart is its minimalistic and economical design. The lamp is constructed using copper tubes and fittings, giving it a unique aesthetic. In its brushed metal version, the copper shell ages over time, growing more personal as the material oxidizes. This aging process adds texture and personality to the lamp.
The Beacon lamp utilizes high-powered LED bands encapsulated in a transparent resin cylinder as its light source. This choice ensures high energy efficiency and a long operating life, eliminating the need for frequent bulb changes. The power switch is seamlessly integrated into the design, with the top cap serving as the switch. This organic integration maintains the lamp's sleek appearance while providing easy usability.
With its LED light source, the Beacon lamp offers both energy efficiency and powerful illumination. The light is bounced off the surrounding wall, creating a warm and soft ambiance. The lamp's compact size and integrated power source make it a versatile lighting solution for various settings.
The Beacon lamp measures 90 mm x 80 mm x 370 mm and features an LED light source with a light temperature of 3500K, a light output of 300 lumens, and a power consumption of 4.8W. It operates on a 12V DC switching power adapter.
The Beacon lamp project started in August 2012 and was completed in February 2013 in Bucharest. Throughout the design process, the team faced challenges in creating a minimalistic light fixture that was both energy efficient and aesthetically pleasing. Integrating the power source and light source into the lamp's body without compromising its design was a significant hurdle. Additionally, finding a way to incorporate the switch into the design in a seamless and user-friendly manner required careful consideration.
The Beacon lamp has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2013. This prestigious award acknowledges the lamp's exceptional expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The Beacon lamp showcases excellence in both technical characteristics and design, leaving viewers amazed and inspired.
